A timeless basic that never goes out of style in Tokyo. A belt is an essential part of any outfit, from business to trendy fashion. With the diversification of materials, colors, and designs, many inexpensive belts are produced overseas, but belts made from high-quality materials are still often made by craftsmen in Japan.
Taito Ward, a downtown area of Tokyo, flourished in the Edo period with leather wholesalers, tanneries, and other leather product companies. Knot started out as a belt manufacturer here in 2011. With skilled craftsmen in its own factory, the company carefully crafts its products without cutting corners on even the smallest details, and continues to improve its knowledge and skills by handling everything from sales to wholesale.
Director Kazuaki Morikawa said, "I am currently in charge of sales, but after joining the company, I spent two years learning how to make belts as a craftsman. I was able to experience the characteristics of leather and the precision of the process, which I would not have noticed if I had only been in sales, and I was able to once again appreciate the value of hand-made work."
The word "knot" means "a knot" or "a bond." The name was chosen to express the idea that a belt is a tool for fastening, and to cherish the connections with people that are born through the work of making belts. The texture and beauty of the leather stands out In the process of making cowhide belts for gentlemen, the cowhide is first cut to the specified size for the front and back, and a core material is inserted between them before processing. Since the cut cut surface of the leather is not colored, it is "edge dyed" at the finishing stage. This is the process of applying paint to the edge (cut surface), which serves to match the color of the belt surface and to give it a glossy finish. After the first dyeing, the company scrapes the surface of the edge with sandpaper and dyes it again to give it a smooth roundness. When making belts with a heavy feel, a matte agent is applied to give it a subdued finish.
The belt is sometimes presented to men as a "symbol of success." It is said to be a reference to sumo wrestlers tying their mawashi belts and martial arts winners hoisting their championship belts.
In order to bring out the best in the leather, they spare no effort in carrying out laborious work, in order to ensure a soft feel when touched and a beautiful appearance. This is a men's belt that is truly a symbol of success. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, the simple design is timeless and packed with ingenuity to ensure long-lasting use.
